Richard Mahoney is joining Mercersburg Academy this year as an admission counselor.
“Out of everything that drew me in, I think it was just the beauty of the campus. When I came for a tour, the beauty was just outstanding. It was amazing. My wife and I came, we saw the chapel, we saw the gym and we saw Traylor Hall, and everything was just so old school and beautiful and rich with history, so it definitely drew us in,” said Mahoney.
Before coming to Mercersburg, Mahoney worked at the Webb School in Tennessee in the athletic department while also pursuing a degree in physical education. Admissions has been a big change for Mahoney, but he is excited to experience a different side of boarding school.
“I look forward to interacting with students face to face, getting to know the campus and community better, going to the dining hall, having a meal, and conversing over some good food. I played lacrosse in college and I look forward to helping Mr. Kerr with lacrosse and I will be on the court for basketball in the winter,” said Mahoney.
Outside of work, Mahoney enjoys fingerboarding or “tech decking”; he was a sponsored competitive fingerboarder in high school.
He is also a massive fan of the outdoors; he’s been on several backpacking trips, including a hike of Mount Rainier a couple of years ago. Mahoney said he would be interested in joining the Mercersburg Outdoor Education program. “I would be open to weekend hiking trips and also overnight ones.” Over the summer, he completed a week-long backpacking trip on a section of the Appalachian Trail.
“I am extremely excited to dive into the school year head first! Mercersburg is an exceptional place that affords everyone the opportunity to grow and be themselves. I am proud to be at a school that is taking steps in a positive direction,” said Mahoney.
