DEAR ADDY:
Greetings from May! At last! ‘Tis May! I love May!! What do I love about May? Everything about May. My aunt was born in May. May Day, my hands down favorite holiday, comes in May. In third grade, my broken wrist healed…in May. Last year I got to meet my mayor. When last year? In May! This year, my May has been a bit different (though I, of course, cannot complain, as everyone is sailing in a boat of a similar make). However, just because this May is different, does not mean I will sit in my slippers and let it be worse. I want to do something crazy and safe! The media has told me I should pick up a new hobby, but my region lacks the necessary raw materials. I would love something simple, but inspirational. Something I could keep up with for the rest of my life and one day teach my children. I wouldn’t even mind if my new hobby maybe looked good on college apps. Do you have any ideas?
Lovingly,
MAY FEVER
DEAR MAY:
First off, I love your spirit. There is nothing more important than appreciating what you have and looking to make the best out of what you are missing. With that said, I believe it is fully possible for you to make this different May a great May, and I think you are looking in all the right places. Definitely pick up a new hobby! This is the time to assert yourself and pick up whatever it is you have always wanted to pick up! Ask around your family friends and see if there is someone who could safely deliver you an instrument that has been collecting dust in their home. Maybe there isn’t? Master your whistle! Check the closets for a toy harmonica or recorder, and wash it thoroughly! All else fails, go snooping in your garage or attic. Spend some time there, immerse yourself, see what you can find! Maybe the raw materials you needed? Now more than ever, with time at your disposal, if there is a will, there is a way. Think deeply about what you have always wanted to do…graffiti?…dig a deep hole?…explore the historically industrial side of your town by foot? Go crazy and, as you so wisely pointed out, be safe! I eagerly encourage you to take a look at last week’s edition of Hustle and Bustle for a thirty-item long bucket list that is sure to provide you with at least a couple activities to hold you over while you are still searching. I hope this helps!
Best,
Addy
