On Saturday October 26, the football team made Mercersburg history: it was the first team ever to represent Mercersburg Academy in play-offs. The game was a nail-biter: the lead constantly switching between Mercersburg and Delaware Christian Academy. However, Mercersburg proved its fortitude, winning 44-36.
There were many players who stepped up for the Storm, including quarterback and team co-captain Campbell Prentiss ’20, who accumulated 394 total passing yards and 5 passing touchdowns. Two of those touchdowns were to tight end and fellow team co-captain Jack Yeager ’20, who tallied 238 yards after 4 receptions. Wide receiver Aiden Nelson ’23 compiled 53 yards after 3 receptions, with a touchdown to boot. In all, the team accrued 94 rushing yards.
Reflecting on the game, Prentiss said, “During the game I was nervous, but our defense made enough stops and offense was clicking on all cylinders, leading us to a win. Coach Brown was dialing up perfect play-calls, and everyone was flying around at 100 miles per hour. We beat a good team that day. I’m proud of our performance.”
Team co-captain Zander Patent ’20 relayed his excitement in anticipation for the upcoming Keystone Championship game against Perkiomen, saying “Coming back from last year, I knew 8-man would be pretty different than 11-man. Despite the changes, I knew that both the incoming and returning guys could play with enough grit to make big things happen. Our grit combined with our coaches’ determination got us to the place we’re in.”
Head coach Andy Brown summed up the team’s fight perfectly, “It was a big win for our players, season, and program. I am so proud of them. We are 24 strong. The team had each others’ backs, trusted each other, and fought all four quarters. We have fantastic senior leaders and they stepped it up this past week. I am excited to get back to work by preparing for another four quarter fight this weekend in the championship game.”
